Large split rings are easy to open either with fingernails or one of the screwdrivers on my full size Swiss Army knife.

Is there a tool to help open smaller split rings so they could be easier loaded up or unloaded?

    Thanks

Check out the sites that sell fishing gear, they sell split ring pliers. Once you use them, you will find them indispensable

In a pinch you can use a staple puller. Usually I use my Swisstool, one of the smaller flats works for twisting them open. If you're looking for purpose built, generics on Amazon run around five bucks. Xuron makes some nice ones if it's stuff you'll be using a lot.

If you have a full size SAK and if you don't use the small blade so much, you can just dull the blade on purpose use it as such.

A combination of pliers (to hold it steady) and a small prytool/screwdriver/nail file is what I usually use.

    Try a staple remover.

Hi folks, I went to Wally World and they had the split ring pliers in the fishing Dept but they were 7 bucks. I picked up a 99 cent staple remover. If it doesn't work well I'll get the Tec pliers the next time I order from him. I can also use the staple remover to remove Staples I guess.

I have no experience with the Key Sargeant, but hear it can open a split ring.

I have some experience with the Key Sergeant. I bought one last week to redo my keychain. It was great for, say, the split ring that came with my Fenix E01 (probably a size 10 ring, so almost 12mm inside diameter). For the really, really tiny split ring on my Leatherman Style, I had to use some split ring pliers I had for jewelry making, just because the handles gave me greater control. The Key Sergeant is really small, so I couldn't get enough of a grip. (It's still good to have as a scraper, though.)

That's what I was afraid of. In general the larger rings are not a problem but the tiny rings are the real problem. For example the tiny rings on my Princeton Tec Pulsar 2 and my Fenix E05 did a number on my fingernails. I haven't had a chance to try my new 99 cent wally world staple remover yet (just got it yesterday and had to watch Wrestlemania lol) but can anyone tell me in general how successful they have been with staple removers with those very tiny rings?

    Thanks

I wound up picking up a split ring plier at the local fishing supply store. About 10 bucks. Seems to be working well for even small rings.

    Thanks to all.
